About me
Sonya C. Henry was born and raise in Atlanta, GA. Before she was a Child Sexual Abuse Strategist, Youth Development Coach, and Minister; she was a victim of Child Sexual Abuse.
Growing up black and molested is the most gut taking, eradicating experience but she conquered. At 13 years old she started her research and discovered that the black community was suffering because of the lack of research on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). As a young girl, Sonya learned that Child Sexual Abuse is a big epidemic in the black community.
Based upon her research she learned that her story was different from what researcher had found about CSA victims. To every action there's a reaction, to every cause there is an effect, and each child is affected differently based upon the time and events of the abuse. Growing up, Sonya knew she was different from other young girls, she struggled behaviorally, it wasn't about knowing right from wrong, it was about surviving.
Sonya began to dissect herself and her self destructive behavior. She learned that some of peers shared some of the same self destructive behaviors. When Ms. Henry was 14 she attended a support group and sat next to her 6th grade classmate who was a victim of CSA, they found support in each other.
After so many therapy sessions, Sonya became fed up, she thought to herself "these people can't help me because they never walked in my shoes, but maybe I can help myself and girl like me" That's when she knew that her life would be dedicated to walking black CSA victims into their victory.
Four years later in 2011 Sonya went on to pursue to her major in Applied Behavior Analysis. She graduated from Savannah State University in 2016 obtaining her Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis with a concentration in Africana Studies, and Psychology. During her college term she served as a certified Suicide and Crisis Victim Advocate under the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire for 4 years. Sonya spent her spare time presenting educational presentation on the Science of Child Sexual Abuse, telling her story to her college peers, local churches, and support groups.
After graduation Sonya moved to New York City in hopes to grow and establish her consulting business, she served briefly with City Year New York and Safe Horizon Counselor Center in Brooklyn NY.
